Larkin, Roycroft and Forest Lawn Legends- From Beginning to End
Elbert Hubbard’s exciting life began “slinging soap” at a young age for his brother-in-law John Larkin. Hubbard’s marketing genius of creating mail order merchandising was hugely successful and helped build the Larkin Company into a major force in American retail and business.
Achieving financial stability, Hubbard at age thirty-six, retired in 1893 and decided to follow his dreams of being a literary savant. After travel abroad, to learn about William Morris in England, Hubbard returned to East Aurora, created the Roycroft and began a historical era that embraced the Head, Heart and Hand.
The Roycroft Campus Corporation (RCC) and Forest Lawn Cemetery are proud to sponsor a Little Journey to Buffalo to connect the links that join Larkin, Roycroft and Forest Lawn, on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 from 1-5pm.
An air-conditioned motor coach will depart from the Roycroft Campus accompanied by Roycroft
docent, Linda Ulrich-Hagner and RCC Associate Director, Clare Root. A quick look at the Larkin @ Exchange Building, the original home of Buffalo Pottery, and other Buffalo landmarks, begins the view into the past. Roycroft enthusiast and Forest Lawn Guide, Sandy Starks, will then join the group in Buffalo and continue to explore the connections.
The Buffalo segment begins with the Heath House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for William Heath and his wife Mary (sister of Elbert Hubbard) and Larkland – the John Larkin family compound located on Lincoln Parkway.
Then the journey continues with a trip through time at the historic Forest Lawn Cemetery with a moment or two of silence at the final resting place of those with links to the Larkin Company and the Roycroft. Forest Lawn sites will include the Larkin / Hubbard Family, Martin Family, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Blue Sky Mausoleum, Charles Roelfs, Clara Schlagel and a few other turn of the 20th Century notables. The Arts & Crafts architecture and the Pan American art history will also be highlighted.
A reception will follow in the Chapel at Forest Lawn for guests to enjoy the natural landscape and beauty of Western New York’s largest arboretum.
Tickets are $35.00 and may be purchased by calling the Roycroft Campus Corporation at 716 655-0261. Or visit the website at www.forest-lawn.com or www.roycrofcampuscorporation.com. Seating is limited – early reservations are recommended
